Field Notes: Soybean Variety Trial

The soybean trial was planted after a cold week in mid-May when the soil temperature started warming up and the forecast was favourable, calling for warm temperatures for the next few days. Planting went very well into ideal conditions and I applied a pre-emerge herbicide on May 24. Soybeans emerged quickly, so I applied a second herbicide on June 16 in order to control grasses and volunteer canola. Soybeans do not like weed competition, so keeping the field clean from the start is critical, which is often difficult as to not track the field too much if conditions are wet.

Overall, the trial looked great all year, which allows us to evaluate multiple varieties for emergence, height, architecture, disease and yield. This trial was planted on 15″ row widths with a New Holland disc drill.
