Wheat Strips Notes
Rainfall in 2019 was very similar to both 2018 and 2017. The difference this spring was less extreme heat in May as compared to 2018. The wheat crop did not show as dramatic drought stress in 2019, although shorter than normal, the crop did manage to hang onto the tillers into July when we finally did receive a signinificant amount of rain. Disease pressure was very low again this year but we did continue with our fungicide applications. Miravis Ace is a new group of fungicides and had a slight yield advantage, on average of 4 replicated strips to both Caramba and Prosaro XTR.
Wheat Special Fert. Notes
The specialty fertilizer trial is designed to look at multiple nitrogen applicaton timings, sources, stabilizers and additional add on products like Copper to Aspire K which is Potassium and Boron. The base treatment was 40 lbs of actual N total at planting or 90 lbs total at planting seed placed followed up by broadcast or dribble banding additonal nitrogen. Each plot was 3 acres in size, but non replicated. The idea behind this trial was to compare various nitrogen fertilizer applicaiton timings, placements, sources and stabilizers or controlled release forms. Applications were made on June 14th, just before a small rain event of 4/10″ over the next 3 days. In the end, yield was not significantly different between treatments, but was compared to the non fertilized check. Protein was lower than the overall farm averege with only 90 lbs of Nitrogen total applied.
