2019 Oats Report

TRIAL OBJECTIVE:CS Camden is a large plant with very good agronomic package and high yield potential. It was compared to a new oat variety ORe3542M. CDC Arborg is a new variety has strong straw and is a slightly taller variety. Summit is the variety check in this trial. Fungicide was applied at GS 42 even though there was little evidence of disease.

Oats Trial Notes

The Oat Agronomy trial emerged and looked good all year. It did not show much sign of moisture stress early on and the 4″ rain in early July was much needed. The crop was shorter than all varieties listed. However, the dry spring had more affect than we thought. Main stem maturity was reached in early August, but the tillers had been delayed as a result of moisture stress early on. The tillers were delayed so much that a decision needed to be made as to which crop we would want to harvest, the main stem or the tillers. The decision was made to pre-harvest the main stem and hopefully stop the tillers before they could fill properly and have the combine fan clean out the light oats. The average of all fungicide treatments were compared to the check. There was 1 bushel advantage to applying a fungicide in 2019. Not surprising with the dry conditions. The CS Camden is a large plant with a very good agronomic package and high yield potential. It was compared to a new oat variety, ORe3542M developed by Oat Advantage and marketed by SeCan and is a shorter, strong strawed variety. CDC Arborg is a new variety marketed by FP Genetics which has strong straw and is a slightly taller variety. Summit is the variety check in this trial. Fungicide was applied at GS 42 even though there was little evidence of disease.
