Field Notes: CANOLA STRIP TRIAL

Because of the dry conditions in the spring, the canola was seeded at 1 1/2 ” which is deeper than usual. We were targeting a final plant stand between 5-7 plants per ft2, based on thousand seed weight (TSW). A timely rain after seeding ensured excellent emergence (see table). Less than 2″ of rain through May and June resulted in visible crop stress.

A crop saving rain the last week of June turned the crop around and supported the decision to spray a fungicide. — A hot dry July advanced the crop by a week and made for earlier swathing and harvesting. Plots were swathed at 60% SCC, which required us to swath at 3 different dates. This resulted in multiple harvest dates as well. Based on the dry 2018 growing conditions, yields were estimated in the low 40 bu/acre range. Definitely a surprise to see yields top 50 bu/acre on a dry year as well as prolonged heat during flowering.

Westar was added to the trial for 2018 to look at a variety that was registered back in 1982 and was the standard for canola production. Agronomically speaking, Westar looked good through the entire season. At swathing, plants were lodged compared to other varieties and didn’t look as heavy as current varieties. In the end, 38 bu/acre, maybe on a dry year, would have been acceptable. But, compared to current hybrids, it definitely doesn’t compete.

Field Notes: CANOLA PRECISION

This was our first year for planting canola with a precision planter. Actual Canola plates were used from Precision Planting in our Kinze 3500 planter. The actual plants per square foot were hard to get exact as the optical sensor in the seed tube cannot count seed drop that quick with that many seeds passing by. However, the 20/20 monitor was able to show that our actual population was very close to the set seed drop we were targeting. Plant counts were measured at various times during the year and used in conjuction with our seed TSW to give us our final plants per square foot. There are some variables that can be taken into account. We did compensate our fertility with the New Holland disc drill, but we were not able to get it the same. Fertility in this trial was different, and with any planter that has limited fertility options, getting the proper starter fertilizer in the seed row is a challenge. For 2019, we will be banding fertilizer on 15″ rows in fall to prepare for planting canola in the spring.
